Sinossi:
Con protagonista la leggenda canadese della Drag Race Kendall Gender, Stay è una tenera esplorazione delle relazioni. Durante la loro ultima notte in città, Kaleb – conosciuto più comunemente con il nome d’arte Ivy Diamonds (Kendall Gender) – incontra Ryan (Riley Davis), un artista di Vancouver. Le poche ore che trascorrono insieme prima che Kaleb ritorni alla sua tumultuosa relazione gli danno un inaspettato senso di lucidità.

Parole del regista: “STAY è ispirato da anni di essere un fan della drag art e guardare Drag Race e chiedendosi cosa vuol dire data ed essere in un rapporto quando sei un artista di resistenza, e che cosa è come uscire con una drag queen? Mi sono chiesto, “È difficile per una delle parti? Come sono queste esperienze?”.
Con STAY voglio raccontare una storia di un rapporto che non è ostacolato da questo stigmatismo e dai tipici contrattempi che abbiamo visto spesso affrontare nel cinema queer. Voglio raccontare una storia che cattura una tensione innata unica. Anche se l’ambientazione è particolare, penso che la storia sia molto universale. Che non ha incontrato qualcuno spontaneamente una notte e aveva una connessione istantanea solo per avere quel busto bolla romantica perché quella persona non è disponibile. Soprattutto, volevo creare un ritratto di Drag da una prospettiva molto più profonda. La storia di STAY è rilevante oggi come sempre nel suo tentativo di mostrare che sono più che belle trucco e parrucche. Ci sono così tante storie da raccontare in questo mondo e così tante che non vengono raccontate.
STAY esplora un gay in erba e trascina il romanticismo attraverso una lente naturalistica che ci fa sentire come se fossimo nella stanza, proprio lì con loro. Spero che il pubblico si allontani dal film sapendo che tutti noi troveremo l’amore ad un certo punto della nostra vita, e non importa se sei gay, etero, bi, transgender o una drag queen.”

King Louie è un regista-produttore queer, filippino-canadese, impegnato in visioni senza compromessi che sfidano i paradigmi convenzionali. Synopsis:
Starring Canadian Drag Race legend Kendall Gender, Stay is a tender exploration of relationships. On their last night in town, Kaleb – more commonly known by his stage name Ivy Diamonds (Kendall Gender) – meets Ryan (Riley Davis), an artist from Vancouver. The few hours they spend together before Kaleb returns to his tumultuous relationship give him an unexpected sense of clarity.
The short was selected for fifteen Festivals, including: LGBT+ Film Festival Poland (2023), Out & Loud – Pune International Queer Film Festival (2023), Vancouver Short Film Festival (2023) and Way Out West Film Fest (2023).
Words from the director: “STAY is inspired by years of being a fan of drag art and watching Drag Race and wondering what it’s like to date and be in a relationship when you’re a drag artist, and what it’s like to date a drag queen? I asked myself, “Is it difficult for one of the parties? What are these experiences like?”.
With STAY I want to tell a story of a relationship that is not hindered by this stigmatism and the typical setbacks that we have often seen faced in queer cinema. I want to tell a story that captures a unique innate tension. Even though the setting is particular, I think the story is very universal. That didn’t meet someone spontaneously one night and have an instant connection only to have that romantic bubble bust because that person isn’t available. Most of all, I wanted to create a portrait of Drag from a much deeper perspective. STAY’s story is as relevant today as ever in its attempt to show that they are more than just makeup and wigs. There are so many stories to be told in this world and so many that aren’t being told.
STAY explores a budding gay and drag romance through a naturalistic lens that makes us feel like we’re in the room, right there with them. I hope audiences walk away from the film knowing that we will all find love at some point in our lives, and it doesn’t matter if you’re gay, straight, bi, transgender or a drag queen.”

King Louie is a queer, Filipino-Canadian director-producer committed to uncompromising visions that challenge conventional paradigms. He works to encourage dialogue and foster community through the production of films and other forms of media. For the past five years, King has created short films that have screened at local and international film festivals. As a producer, King’s credits include CROSSROADS, which was acquired by Viddsee, LOST BENEATH THE STARS (Warsaw 2018, Edmonton 2018), which was purchased at the Cannes market by RTE Ireland for network and online distribution and secured European cinema and online distribution with Sofy TV. He also produced THE GIFT (currently on the festival circuit) and THE LONELIEST BOY IN THE WORLD (featured in Director Notes, Booooooom TV), written by and starring Dylan Schmid. As a writer and director, King’s credits include NENE (Outstanding Director at the 21st Reelworld Film Fest) and the recently completed STAY starring Kendall Gender (Canada’s Drag Race Season 2, Canada vs The World) King Louie also works in the effects department visuals as a production manager and currently works at Distillery VFX.
